Aggressive efforts need to be made to reach out to students by school counselors and staff members providing support to students involved in traumatic situations. School administrators need to require and provide classes and work groups to counselors and teachers with additional information on recognizing the signs of an adolescent at risk; tools and resources for support to make a positive impact on students’ lives immediately after a difficult event. Additionally, mandatory classes should be implemented for students to help to provide an open dialogue on not only empathy for others, but providing information on where they can find support in the unfortunate event they too are faced with an unforeseen traumatic event.
One never knows what will happen on any given day, most hope for a relaxed, uneventful, everything goes as planned day. Unfortunately, something difficult happens in everyone’s life, some events more traumatic than others, and as a young adolescent with little to no experience when it comes to traumatic events it can be devastating; life changing.  Such an event not only makes a young high school student more self-conscious about emotional responses when questioned concerning the event, but can also cause a radical shift in the way they think about life. Some may engage in destructive and reckless behavior, negatively affecting school performance and attendance, progressing to events that with the proper help could have had a much more positive ending.
