Research paper: The Role of a Nurse Practitioner

In today’s life, caring for the people suffering from chronic health conditions has become a more significant part of the daily nursing. Ever since the world health organization has acknowledged the preventable risk factors that are mainly the cause of this disease, nurses are now required to expand their range of expertise and skills which will enable them to work efficiently and effectively as well with individuals who have frequent complex health issues and chronic which are challenging and difficult. Being a nurse practitioner dealing with a patient who is suffering from chronic health condition the experience is not different from the rest. These diseases are evolving requiring new skills every day so that one can be taken care of and treated which happen in rare cases.
Personally being a nurse practitioner I have been taking care of an aged woman who is suffering from diabetes. The doctor who attended to the patients had prescribed medication, which she has been using. However, sometimes when the blood sugar rises they cause her so much pain and sometimes it even affects her eyesight. Ever since she has been taking the same medicine for a long period, she has started to think they are not working as her health is deteriorating every day. The last time I attended her, she asked me to recommend a specific therapy that she can use the medication to improve and speed up the healing. I am not familiar with therapies that can be accompanied by treatment thus, I had to do research.
Nevertheless, most individuals who are under nursing practitioner’s care also have numerous chronic diseases, which are not related directly to the reason they are diagnosed. Therefore, it is dangerous for the suffering individuals trying to intensify therapy for the acute disease because it can cause more harm than benefit. So when my patient asked me to prescribe an alternative therapy, I had to take more caution on it and do the research. If changes are made in the treatment of this illness, the result can be in similar scenarios with the capability to cause adverse medicine reactions, which can contribute to confusion about the treatment regimen and maybe non-adherence (LoBiondo-Wood et al.2017). For instance, if I could use intensifying lowering glucose medications to my patient and discharge the patient on the sliding-scale regular insulin, it can result to the severe hypoglycemia when she is left alone without my aid. However, if I add a bisphosphonate in many cases, it causes an adverse drug reaction, which on the other hand contributes to medicine regimen complication that usually increases the risk of medication non-adherence.
After doing thorough research regarding the alternative treatments, I found that in order to manage diabetes, one should maintain blood sugar levels. I also discovered that often-traditional therapies such as insulin injections could be used to keep blood sugar level normal. There are also complementary and alternative therapies which aim is to treat the mind and body. These alternatives include, supplements, herbs, and exercise, diet and relaxation techniques. There is also small evidence if these therapies work and although they are considered natural, it does not mean they do not interfere with medications (LoBiondo-Wood et al. 2017). Natural has no legal definitions.
I also asked the doctor to check if the patient was suffering from any other acute disease to avoid more confusion on her treatment. After analyzing all the therapies, I had to find out I came up with few therapies, which could be used along with her treatment. One was changing her diet; her food was to be completely unprocessed as she was supposed to have them as they are from the farm. I also recommended workouts daily for at least thirty minutes. They were not necessarily running but taking a walk. Supplements were another option since they do not interfere with the treatment. The patients started the therapies immediately, and after a period, we could see the result.
In conclusion, many people are suffering from chronic diseases in the world today, and they require nurse practitioners to take care of them. However, the tasks are becoming challenging every day. As per my case, I was so reluctant doing my daily routine job of nursing the patient suffering from diabetes until the day she asked me to prescribe for her therapies to be accompanied by the treatment. Ever since I did not know about any, I had to do thorough research on that subject. However, it was difficult for me to know which therapies are best since some can cause more harm than profit. At last, I was able to come up with the solution. Therefore, as many chronic diseases are evolving we the nurse practitioner should also stay updated so that we can give the best service and help where needed.
