After reading The Yellow Wallpaper
and The Odyssey it is easy to notice that the two stories are very similar. The
main characters Jane from The Yellow Wallpaper and Odysseus from The Odyssey
both show a form of bravery that makes the stories similar. In the stories The
Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and The Odyssey by Homer the
characters Jane and Odysseus went through the hero quest journey by receiving
their call to cross the thresh hold into the special world, which made them
more brave
In the story The Odyssey the king of
Ithaca Odysseus receives his call to action, when he is called to fight in the
Trojan war. Odysseus was brave enough to go to war and risk his life and his
men to fight for his home.
Odysseus crosses the thresh hold
when a storm hits and it causes him and his men to become off track of their
return home. Which also mean that it could mean it would take even longer for
his return home. He then has to fight the Cyclops. Another part of the thresh
hold are the Gods testing him and distracting him from returning back home.
Odysseus enters the special world
when he ends up on an island and has to ignore the Gods and Goddesses that are
trying to distract him. Also when Odysseus is ends up on an island he has to
fight the Cyclops and throws a rock at his eye.
Odysseus finally returns home where
men have terrorized his home and harassed his wife into marrying them. He
reunites with his son and has to convince him that he is his father. Odysseus
then dresses as an old beggar and the men laugh and make jokes about him not
knowing that he is Odysseus. He then talks to his wife in private and tells her
that he is Odysseus but she didn’t believe him. He had to prove to his wife
that he was her husband. Afterwards he killed all the men that were harassing
his wife for twenty years he continued with his life.
Odysseus was brave during his hero
quest because he left his home for twenty years and fought basically for his
life.
In The Yellow Wallpaper the woman
Jane was the wife of John a psychiatrist. Her call to start her journey was
when her husband told her that she had a mental illness and she was forced to
stay in a room twenty-two out of the day. She was locked in a room with a
yellow wallpaper where she started her hero quest journey.
Jane’s call to action was when she
was staring at the wallpaper and began to see a woman in the wallpaper. The
woman she saw in the wallpaper represented Jane being trapped in the room all
day. Jane watched the woman she saw in the wallpaper during the twenty-two
hours that she was locked inside the room.
Jane entered the special world while
she stared at the woman in the yellow wallpaper. Every time she would stare at
the yellow wallpaper she would enter a special world where she believed that
she represented. The woman in the wallpaper was trapped just like Jane.
Jane showed a form of bravery by
standing up to her husband. When Jane watched the woman in the wallpaper the
woman escaped what she was being trapped from. The woman escaping gave Jane the
bravery to escape her marriage. Jane escaped her marriage by killing herself.
Both of the stories show a form of bravery because both Jane and Odysseus
crossed the thresh hold and become brave in the end.
