The
Yacoubian Building by Alaa Al-Aswani
Alaa Al-Aswany was born
on 26th may 1957 where his mother Zainab who was from the
upper-class family and his uncle was education minister prior to the uprising
in Egypt in 1952. Abbas Al-Aswany who was his father came from Aswan whose
profession was a lawyer and also a writer who is well known as charismatic and
also a captivating speaker with a broad loyalty to the Egyptian revolution
intelligence. In 1972, Abbas al Aswani received a state award for literature and
later died at when Alaa Al Aswani was 19 years old. Al Aswany pursued his
degree in dental and medicine from the Cairo University. In 1985, he went to
University of Illinois at Chicago to advance his studies. He was able to
communicate in English, Spanish, Arabic and French. He also studies Spanish
literature in the capital of Spain. He wedded his spouse in his tender age of
20s where they divorced after getting their son Seif. Later he married Eman at
age of 37 where they got two daughters nada and Mai.
He was actively involved
in writing literature critiques which include “ Parenthic phrase” in Al-Shabab
and he was mainly with issues relating to culture in the Egyptian daily. He
further wrote more articles which were available in major global newspapers
which include the New York Times, the Guardian, El Paris and the independent.
The Yacoubian building is his second novel which is an ironical depiction of
the modern society of Egyptians. The novel has been widely read in several
parts such including Egypt and the Middle East. The novel was made into the largest
financial plan movies that has been produced in Egypt ever since which was then
screened in the global film competitions. It was therefore considered a bigger
hit in Egypt. Al-Aswany was however banned from attending the premiere. The
movie is one of the movies that address the social taboos as well as the
heightened governmental corruption which comprised election rigging. The movies
have made several intellectuals to think that his book had a significant role
in triggering sentiments of revolution among the Egyptian citizens. He went
ahead to confess that in the 2011 Egyptian uprising, most of the protestors contacted
him and told him that they were there
because of what he wrote in his book and cast in the movie. The Yacoubian
building was also made as one of the series in the Egyptian television
utilizing the same name.
